Shōgun Season 2

Shōgun Season 2 Begins Filming in Vancouver — Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis Return to FX’s Epic Drama

After capturing global attention with a sweeping tale of power, honor, and strategy in feudal Japan, the critically acclaimed FX and Disney+ Hotstar drama series Shōgun is returning for a second season.

Production for Season 2 is officially scheduled to begin in January 2025 in Vancouver, marking the next chapter of one of the most successful series in FX history.

Created for television by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, Shōgun was initially a fresh adaptation of James Clavell’s best-selling historical novel.

The first season ended on a powerful note, and now, the creative team is expanding the saga with an entirely original story set ten years after the events of Season 1.

A Glorious Return: Sanada and Jarvis Back in Action

Fans of the first season will be thrilled to know that Hiroyuki Sanada, who delivered a commanding performance as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, is returning for Season 2.

In recognition of his exceptional work, Sanada has also been promoted to Executive Producer.

Joining him once again is Cosmo Jarvis, reprising his role as John Blackthorne, the English navigator whose alliance with Toranaga changed the course of history.

Jarvis will also serve as a Co-Executive Producer in the upcoming season, highlighting his growing influence on the series’ direction.

This powerful duo will continue their complex and intertwined journeys in a Japan that has evolved dramatically in the decade since their fateful meeting.

Shōgun Season 2: An Original Chapter Beyond the Book

While Season 1 closely followed the plot of Clavell’s novel, Season 2 breaks new ground, with Kondo and Marks building a wholly original narrative.

The writers’ room has completed work on this new storyline, which promises to deliver the same depth, intensity, and political intrigue that defined the first season.

By moving beyond the source material, Shōgun opens up exciting new possibilities for character development and plot twists, making Season 2 a must-watch for both fans of the book and newcomers alike.

Season 1 of Shōgun didn’t just win hearts—it made television history. It became FX’s most-watched program ever, and went on to sweep the awards season, earning a staggering 18 Emmy® Awards. These included:

Shōgun also took home the Golden Globe® for Best Television Series – Drama, and earned praise from nearly every major industry body, including the AFI, SAG, WGA, DGA, and TCA.
