HBO’s Harry Potter Series Begins Production New Cast

The wizarding world is back! HBO has officially kicked off production on its much-anticipated Harry Potter television reboot at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK — the very same studio where the original film series was shot.

Set to premiere in 2027, the HBO Original series promises a faithful, decade-long adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved books, reimagined for a new generation of fans.

Fans in Malaysia can look forward to streaming the series on HBO and HBO Max, which is available locally and will soon expand to new markets such as Germany, Italy, and the UK.

A Brand-New Cast Steps into Iconic Roles

HBO has unveiled a new wave of casting announcements, introducing several actors stepping into key supporting roles. Among them:

  • Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, the courageous underdog and future herbology master.
  • Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Harry’s spoiled cousin.
  • Louise Brealey as Madam Rolanda Hooch, Hogwarts’ spirited flying instructor.
  • Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander, the enigmatic wandmaker.

These additions build on a growing list of fresh faces chosen to bring depth and authenticity to the world of Harry Potter — with more major casting announcements expected in the months ahead.

Behind the Magic: Industry Veterans Lead Production

Just as important as the on-screen talent are the department heads working behind the scenes. HBO has enlisted a team of award-winning creatives from some of television and cinema’s most acclaimed productions:

  • Adriano Goldman (Director of Photography) – known for his Emmy-winning work on The Crown.
  • Cate Hall (Hair and Makeup Designer) – with credits that include Peaky Blinders and Sherlock.
  • Mara LePere-Schloop (Production Designer) – acclaimed for her intricate world-building on American Gods.
  • Naomi Moore (Set Decorator), Paul Herbert (Stunt Coordinator), and Mark Holt (SFX Supervisor) round out the team crafting the physical wizarding world.

Fans of practical and visual effects will be thrilled to know that John Nolan, the creature effects master behind The Dark Knight and Westworld, will serve as Creature Effects Design Supervisor.

Alexis Wajsbrot (VFX Supervisor) and Dom Sidoli (VFX Producer) will lead the visual effects department to breathe digital life into spells, magical beasts, and the enchanted world of Hogwarts.

Previously announced Holly Waddington will take on costume design, having earned high praise for her work on The Great and Lady Macbeth.

Who’s Creating the Series?

The show is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, whose storytelling expertise includes His Dark Materials and Succession. She’ll be joined by director and executive producer Mark Mylod, best known for helming multiple episodes of Succession, Game of Thrones, and The Menu.

The series is a co-production between HBO, Brontë Film and TV, and Warner Bros. Television. Executive producers include:

  • J.K. Rowling, author of the original book series.
  • Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV.
  • David Heyman, producer of all eight original Harry Potter films and the Fantastic Beasts spin-off series.

What Makes This Adaptation Different?

While the original film franchise was hugely successful, this HBO series aims to deliver a more faithful, detailed adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s seven novels — one that allows each book to be explored over the course of a full season.

That means fans can expect storylines and characters that may have been cut or condensed in the films to finally receive their due.

With a longer runtime and modern storytelling techniques, the series is expected to reintroduce the magic of Hogwarts to both longtime fans and first-time viewers.

The creators promise a “decade-long journey,” hinting at a series that could span multiple seasons — with one season dedicated to each book in the saga.

Where to Watch in Malaysia

Malaysian fans will be able to stream the Harry Potter series on HBO Max, starting from its 2027 premiere. Subscriptions are available via the official HBO Max website or through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Plans start at RM34.90/month or RM279.90/year, giving fans full access to HBO Max’s extensive library — including the complete original Harry Potter movie collection, spin-offs like Fantastic Beasts, and hit series such as House of the Dragon and The Last of Us.

While the series won’t debut until 2027, there’s plenty of time to revisit the beloved world of Harry Potter. Catch up on all eight films and relive the magic, mystery, and mischief of Hogwarts with a fresh perspective — because the next era of wizardry is just beginning.

Stay tuned as more casting details and sneak peeks from the set are expected to be released in the coming months. Whether you’re a lifelong Potterhead or a curious newcomer, HBO’s new take on Harry Potter is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious television projects of the decade.
