Keretapi Sarong 2025: Celebrating Unity and Heritage with the Spirit of ‘Serumpun’

Malaysia is once again gearing up for one of its most colorful and vibrant Malaysia Day traditions – Keretapi Sarong 2025 (KS25).

Returning on 13 September 2025 with the theme “Serumpun”, the cultural flash mob will mark its ninth year of uniting Malaysians in a joyous celebration of identity, diversity, and shared heritage.

A Growing Malaysia Day Tradition

What began as a fun, quirky idea has now transformed into a nationwide cultural phenomenon.

Thousands of participants will don their sarongs, hop onto trains, and gather from 11 different starting stations across the Klang Valley – including Subang Jaya, Kajang, KL Sentral, Putrajaya Sentral, UPM, and Gombak – before converging in Kuala Lumpur.

But this year, the celebration is bigger than ever. Keretapi Sarong 2025 will also be held concurrently in George Town, Ipoh, Kuantan, Sungai Petani, Pasir Mas, Johor Bahru, and Melaka.

The expansion showcases how the movement has transcended the capital city, embracing communities nationwide.

Internationally, KS25 has also made its mark. With editions already held in Berlin and Melbourne, and upcoming ones in London and Sydney, the event has become a cultural export, resonating with Malaysians and global communities alike.

The Theme: Serumpun

The “Serumpun” theme this year carries a powerful message – unity that goes beyond geography. As LOCCO Co-Founder Shamsul Bahrin Zainuzzaman explained, “It is about shared heritage and a common rhythm that connects us as Malaysians, and as part of the wider ASEAN family.”

The Sarong, a timeless cultural garment, symbolizes inclusivity and shared identity. Just like the fabric woven from different threads, Malaysia is made up of diverse communities bound together by common values.

Community, Brands, and Culture Come Together

One of the defining strengths of Keretapi Sarong lies in its collaborations. With RapidKL as the main collaborator, the event merges culture with connectivity.

Malaysia Day is not only about celebrating history and identity, but also about how we move together as Malaysians,” said Adli Abdul Karim from Prasarana Malaysia Berhad.

Major brands are also playing their part in enriching the festivities.

  • MAGGI joins as a Lead Brand Partner, introducing its new MAGGI Sup Ayam Berempah, a flavour inspired by Malaysians’ love for comfort food. KS25 participants will even get the first taste.
  • ZUS Coffee rolls out its “Kopi Sarong, Kopi Kita” campaign, offering limited-edition blends and experiences that bring people together over coffee. The brand also recently launched ZUS NGUPI®, a ready-to-drink kopi that celebrates Malaysian coffee culture.
  • EPF (KWSP) will leverage KS25 as a platform to spread financial awareness with its “Merdeka Daripada Scam” (#KWSPAntiScam) campaign. Through roadshows, games, and activations, participants will learn how to spot scams and stay financially safe.

Tourism Selangor will also spotlight the richness of Selangor’s traditions as part of the Visit Selangor 2025 campaign, further positioning the Sarong as an emblem of cultural pride.

This year’s KS25 is more than just a flash mob; it is also a regional cultural statement.

With Malaysia holding the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, the “Serumpun” theme takes on even greater significance, symbolizing unity not just among Malaysians but also across Southeast Asia.

Keretapi Sarong 2025 : Why It Matters

Keretapi Sarong 2025 is more than a fun Malaysia Day activity

Keretapi Sarong 2025 is more than a fun Malaysia Day activity – it is a reminder of what brings us together. Whether through food, music, fashion, or coffee, the event highlights how culture can act as a connector, bridging gaps across race, religion, and even borders.

The sight of thousands of people in sarongs riding trains, dancing, and celebrating side by side reflects the Malaysia that many aspire to see – diverse, inclusive, and united.

As Keretapi Sarong 2025 celebrates its ninth year, it is clear that the movement has grown into something much larger than a flash mob. It is now a symbol of unity, a cultural tradition, and a regional celebration of togetherness.

So, whether you are in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, or even London, don your sarong this Malaysia Day and be part of a celebration that continues to weave Malaysians together in the true spirit of Serumpun.
