Blizzard Entertainment has officially rolled out The Midnight Pre-Expansion Update, ushering World of Warcraft into its next major phase as the game client advances to version 12.0.
Following the intense events of The War Within, Azeroth’s champions are given little time to recover as a new threat looms—one shaped by the growing influence of the Void and the ambitions of Xal’atath.
This pre-expansion update offers players an early look at several key features and system changes arriving with Midnight, setting the foundation for the battles ahead. From expanded Player Housing functionality to class and user interface updates, the patch signals a significant evolution for modern World of Warcraft.
Player Housing Receives Meaningful Enhancements
One of the standout features in the Midnight pre-expansion update is the continued development of Player Housing. A new system known as Endeavours has been introduced, offering optional neighbourhood-based activities. By participating in these activities, players can earn additional décor items and housing experience points, allowing for deeper personalisation of their in-game homes.
Players who own Midnight will also gain access to new external housing themes inspired by Night Elf and Blood Elf cultures. These themes reflect the rich heritage of Azeroth’s iconic races and provide players with more expressive ways to showcase their allegiance and identity through housing aesthetics.
New Demon Hunter Specialisation and Class/Race Combo
The update also introduces a brand-new class specialisation: Devourer Demon Hunter. Designed as a mid-ranged caster, this specialisation allows Demon Hunters to dive in and out of combat while harnessing the power of the Void itself. By turning Void energy against its own champions, Devourer Demon Hunters bring a fresh playstyle that blends mobility, spellcasting, and thematic intensity.
Alongside this, Blizzard has unlocked a new class and race combination—Void Elf Demon Hunter—further reinforcing the Void-centric narrative leading into Midnight.
Stat and Item Level Squish
To maintain long-term balance and clarity, the Midnight pre-expansion update implements a stat and item level squish. This system-wide adjustment ensures numbers remain readable and manageable, while preserving the relative power progression players have earned throughout their adventures.
User Interface and Transmogrification Improvements
Significant user interface updates are also part of the patch. Players can expect improved customisation options, cleaner raid frames, and expanded display-scaling controls. Enhancements have been made to core UI elements such as nameplates, damage meters, and boss alerts, delivering a cleaner and more informative experience during both solo and group content.
The Transmogrification system has also received updates, continuing Blizzard’s effort to give players greater freedom in expressing their character’s visual identity.
Twilight Ascension Event Arrives January 28
Looking ahead, the Twilight Ascension pre-expansion in-game event will launch on January 28 (AEST / UTC+8). During the event, players will encounter random Void invasions across the world, challenging them to push back against encroaching darkness.
The event will also see the return of the Winds of Mysterious Fortune buff, granting experience boosts for characters leveling from 10 to 79, making it an ideal time for players to prepare alts ahead of Midnight.
With its blend of narrative progression, system upgrades, and new gameplay options, the Midnight pre-expansion update lays the groundwork for World of Warcraft’s next epic chapter.
