The tavern has never felt more intense as Hearthstone unleashes its latest expansion, Cataclysm. Now officially live, the update introduces 135 brand-new collectible cards, fresh gameplay mechanics, and a powerful new way to experience one of Azeroth’s most iconic villains.
At the center of the expansion is the arrival of Deathwing, also known as the Worldbreaker. But this time, players won’t just face him — they’ll have the chance to become him.
Become Deathwing with New Hero Card
One of the biggest highlights of the Cataclysm expansion is the introduction of the Deathwing, Worldbreaker Hero Card. Available for both Shaman and Warrior classes, this card allows players to transform into the legendary dragon himself.
Upon transformation, players can unleash a personal Cataclysm, choosing from four devastating abilities that can completely shift the tide of battle. This marks a unique moment in Hearthstone’s history, giving players direct control over one of the franchise’s most destructive forces.
The Return of Colossal Minions
Cataclysm also brings back the fan-favourite Colossal keyword, introducing six massive Lieutenants that fight alongside Deathwing. These Colossal minions are unlike anything else on the battlefield, as they split into multiple parts that occupy different spaces on the board.
From towering limbs to writhing tentacles, these minions push beyond traditional board limits, creating visually impressive and strategically complex encounters. Their return adds a layer of scale and intensity that fits perfectly with the expansion’s apocalyptic theme.
New Keyword: Herald
Joining the battlefield is a brand-new keyword — Herald. Designed to build momentum early in the game, Herald cards summon Soldiers that mirror the abilities of your class’s Colossal minions.
This mechanic allows players to prepare for late-game dominance by introducing smaller but impactful units early on. It also gives opponents a glimpse of the destruction that awaits, adding a strategic layer of anticipation and counterplay.
New Keyword: Shatter
Another major addition is the Shatter keyword, which introduces a unique twist to card mechanics. When a Shatter card is added to your hand, it splits into two fragments that move to opposite ends.
Players can choose to use each fragment individually, or strategically play the cards between them to recombine the pieces into a single, more powerful card. This mechanic rewards careful planning and adds depth to hand management strategies.
Free Cards and Returning Allies
To help players adapt to the chaos, Chromie — a familiar character from the Warcraft universe — has recruited allies from previous expansions. Players will gain temporary access to cards from Into the Emerald Dream and The Lost City of Un’Goro, including Golden versions.
These Dream City Trial Cards are available for free throughout the Cataclysm event, giving players the opportunity to experiment with deck builds and explore new strategies without additional cost.
For details on how to claim these free rewards, check out the Dragon’s Hoard Guide.
A New Era of Chaos in Hearthstone
With Cataclysm, Hearthstone delivers one of its most ambitious updates yet. From the ability to transform into Deathwing to the introduction of innovative mechanics like Herald and Shatter, the expansion reshapes how the game is played.
The combination of new cards, returning features, and free content ensures that both new and veteran players have plenty to explore. Whether you’re building powerful decks or experimenting with new strategies, Cataclysm offers a fresh and explosive experience.
As the battlefield trembles and Azeroth faces destruction once again, one thing is certain — this is a moment players won’t want to miss.
