In conjunction with Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, BIG CARING Group has joined forces with Colorectal Cancer Survivorship Society Malaysia (CORUM) to launch a nationwide initiative aimed at improving early detection rates of colorectal cancer.
This large-scale campaign targets 10,000 Malaysians aged between 45 and 75, providing them with easier access to screening through selected BIG Pharmacy and CARiNG Pharmacy outlets nationwide. The collaboration marks an important step forward in strengthening preventive healthcare efforts across Malaysia.
Making Screening More Accessible and Affordable
At the core of this initiative is the distribution of immunochemical faecal Occult Blood (iFOBT) self-test kits. These kits offer a simple, non-invasive method for individuals to screen for early signs of colorectal cancer in the comfort of their own homes.
By subsidising the cost of these kits, the initiative aims to remove financial barriers that often discourage people from undergoing regular screening. Accessibility is further enhanced through the widespread presence of community pharmacies, making it easier for individuals to obtain the test kits during their routine visits.
Pharmacists at participating outlets will also play a crucial role by guiding users on how to properly use the kits and advising on the next steps should results indicate the need for further medical attention.
Addressing a Critical Health Challenge
Colorectal cancer is currently the second most common cancer in Malaysia, yet awareness and screening rates remain relatively low. Alarmingly, more than 70% of cases are diagnosed at advanced stages, when treatment becomes more complex and outcomes are less favourable.
This highlights the urgent need for initiatives that promote early detection. Colorectal cancer often begins as small, benign growths known as polyps, which can develop into cancer over time. When identified early through screening, these polyps can be removed before they become life-threatening.
Early detection significantly improves survival rates, with more than 90% of patients surviving when the disease is diagnosed at an early stage. This makes regular screening not just important, but potentially life-saving.
Strengthening Community-Based Healthcare
One of the key strengths of this initiative lies in its use of community pharmacies as accessible healthcare touchpoints. According to BIG CARING Group, pharmacies are often the first place people turn to for health advice, making them an ideal platform for promoting preventive care.
By leveraging its extensive pharmacy network, the group is able to bring essential health services closer to where people live and work. This aligns with Malaysia’s broader healthcare strategy, including the National Strategic Plan for Colorectal Cancer, which aims to increase screening coverage nationwide.
The Role of CORUM in Advocacy and Support
Colorectal Cancer Survivorship Society Malaysia (CORUM) plays a vital role in this partnership by driving advocacy, community engagement, and patient support.
Through its network of survivors, healthcare professionals, and community partners, CORUM helps raise awareness about the importance of screening and encourages more individuals to take proactive steps toward their health.
The organisation also contributes to monitoring the programme’s outcomes, ensuring that the initiative delivers meaningful impact to the communities it serves.
Beyond Screening: Supporting Patients in Their Journey
In addition to providing screening access, the initiative also extends support to individuals who have been diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Through BIG CARING Group’s Ribbon of Hope programme, eligible B40 patients can receive assistance such as rehabilitation equipment loans, including wheelchairs, hospital beds, and oxygen concentrators.
Patients will also benefit from special discounts on essential stoma care products at BIG Pharmacy and CARiNG Pharmacy outlets, helping to ease the financial burden associated with long-term care.
This holistic approach ensures that support is available not only at the point of screening but throughout the entire care journey.
Encouraging Malaysians to Take the First Step
Ultimately, the success of this initiative depends on public participation. Despite the availability of effective screening methods, many Malaysians still delay or avoid screening due to lack of awareness or misconceptions about the process.
By making screening simple, affordable, and accessible, BIG CARING Group and Colorectal Cancer Survivorship Society Malaysia (CORUM) aim to change this mindset and encourage more people to prioritise their health.
This nationwide effort serves as a powerful reminder that early detection can save lives. Taking a simple test today could make all the difference in preventing serious health complications in the future.
With continued collaboration and community support, this initiative has the potential to significantly improve colorectal cancer outcomes in Malaysia—one screening at a time.
