Starbucks Malaysia continues to champion local creativity with the return of its Kopi Creator Kolektif (KCK) programme, unveiling the Class of 2026 in conjunction with World Creativity and Innovation Day.
The initiative highlights ten promising Malaysian talents — five musicians and five filmmakers — selected to participate in a comprehensive creator development programme.
Designed as a creative incubator, KCK provides emerging artists with mentorship, industry exposure, and opportunities to refine their craft before presenting their work to the public.
Nurturing Talent Through Mentorship and Masterclasses
At the heart of KCK is its focus on development. Participants are guided through industry-led masterclasses and mentorship sessions aimed at strengthening both creative and professional skills.
For the music cohort, sessions led by industry experts focus on songwriting, personal branding, and performance readiness. Finalists are also given access to professional studio facilities, allowing them to refine their original compositions.
Meanwhile, the film cohort benefits from structured mentorship programmes that emphasise storytelling, production techniques, and concept development. These sessions help filmmakers transform their ideas into compelling visual narratives.
Coffeehouses as Creative Spaces
The programme is rooted in Starbucks’ “Third Place” philosophy — the idea that coffeehouses serve as more than just places to enjoy beverages. Instead, they function as community spaces where ideas are exchanged, collaborations are formed, and creativity thrives.
Recent studies show that cafés are increasingly seen as “second homes,” especially among students and young professionals. They are spaces for work, social interaction, and creative exploration.
Through Kopi Creator Kolektif, Starbucks Malaysia reinforces this role by transforming its coffeehouses into platforms for discovering and celebrating local talent.
The Journey to the Kopi Creator Kolektif Showcase
Earlier this year, aspiring musicians and filmmakers from across Malaysia responded to an open call, submitting original works and creative portfolios. A panel of industry professionals carefully reviewed these entries before selecting the final ten participants.
These finalists are now undergoing a curated development journey that prepares them for the programme’s highlight event — a live showcase scheduled for 16 May 2026.
The showcase will take place at Starbucks Reserve IOI Mall Damansara, where each participant will present their work to a live audience.
A Night of Creativity and Discovery
The KCK Showcase promises to be a vibrant celebration of Malaysian creativity. Music finalists will perform original songs, while film finalists will debut teaser clips from their projects.
This event serves as a platform for audiences to discover fresh talent and engage with new creative voices shaping Malaysia’s artistic landscape.
Winners from each category will receive prizes valued at RM10,000. The top musician will secure a four-track EP recording deal, while the winning filmmaker will have the opportunity to produce their original short film.
Expanding Opportunities for Local Creators
Kopi Creator Kolektif first debuted in 2025 with a focus on music, featuring performances from local talents. In 2026, the programme expands to include filmmakers, reflecting Starbucks Malaysia’s commitment to supporting diverse creative disciplines.
This expansion not only broadens opportunities for creators but also enriches the cultural landscape by encouraging cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Beyond individual achievements, KCK aims to build a thriving creative community. By connecting artists with mentors, industry professionals, and audiences, the programme creates a supportive ecosystem where creativity can flourish.
It also provides a space for Malaysians to engage with local stories, music, and films — fostering a deeper appreciation for homegrown talent.
A Celebration of Passion and Connection
As the Kopi Creator Kolektif Class of 2026 prepares for their live showcase, the programme stands as a testament to the power of creativity and community.
Through initiatives like KCK, Starbucks Malaysia continues to inspire individuals to pursue their passions, connect with others, and share their stories with the world — all within the welcoming space of a coffeehouse.
Whether through music, film, or a simple cup of coffee, Kopi Creator Kolektif proves that great ideas often begin in the most familiar places.
