IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge 2026: Malaysia’s Ultimate Highway Marathon Returns Stronger Than Ever

The IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge 2026 once again proved why it remains one of Malaysia’s most anticipated running events.

Returning for its 8th edition, the marathon attracted more than 14,000 runners from Malaysia and 22 countries, transforming the New Pantai Expressway (NPE) and BESRAYA Highway into an extraordinary running venue unlike any other in the country.

Jointly organised by IJM Corporation Berhad and Allianz Malaysia Berhad, together with New Pantai Expressway Sdn Bhd and BESRAYA (M) Sdn Bhd, the event continues to showcase how major highways can temporarily become safe and exciting spaces for sports, fitness and community engagement.

For runners, this isn’t just another race. It is a rare opportunity to experience Kuala Lumpur’s highways from an entirely different perspective—without traffic, surrounded only by thousands of passionate runners chasing their personal goals.

A Unique Highway Running Experience

IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge 2026 Flag-Off

Unlike conventional road races held in city centres, the Duo Highway Challenge offers participants the chance to run on two fully closed urban highways.

Wide roads, long stretches and elevated highway sections provide runners with scenic city views that are rarely seen during normal traffic hours. Running through highways before sunrise, watching the city gradually wake up while thousands of runners move together, creates an atmosphere that’s both exciting and unforgettable.

This unique concept has become the signature identity of the event since its introduction and continues to attract local and international runners every year.

Four Categories for Every Runner

Whether you’re an experienced marathoner or participating in your very first running event, the IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge has a category suitable for everyone.

Participants could choose from:

  • 42.195KM Full Marathon
  • 21KM Half Marathon
  • 10KM Run
  • 5KM Fun Run

This inclusive approach welcomes elite athletes, recreational runners, corporate teams, families and first-time participants.

The diversity of runners also creates an energetic atmosphere where experienced marathoners and beginners inspire each other throughout the race.

International Recognition Continues to Grow

The event has steadily built a strong reputation not only in Malaysia but across the region.

As a World Athletics-certified race and recognised member of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), the Duo Highway Challenge follows internationally recognised race standards.

These recognitions further position Malaysia as an attractive destination for international sports tourism while strengthening confidence among overseas participants seeking professionally organised marathon events.

Adding to its impressive achievements, the event was recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records in 2024 for two remarkable milestones:

  • First marathon conducted on a fully closed highway.
  • Longest running event held on a highway.

These accomplishments continue to distinguish the event from other road races held throughout the country.

Safety Remains the Top Priority

Managing a race involving over 14,000 runners on two active highways is no small task.

Months of planning and close cooperation between New Pantai Expressway, BESRAYA, the Malaysian Highway Authority, Royal Malaysia Police, emergency medical teams and numerous supporting agencies ensured the event ran smoothly from start to finish.

From traffic management and hydration stations to medical support and race logistics, participants were able to enjoy the event with confidence knowing that safety remained the organisers’ highest priority.

Such meticulous planning has become one of the reasons many runners continue returning year after year.

Running Towards a More Sustainable Future

Beyond promoting healthy lifestyles, the organisers also continue integrating sustainability initiatives into the event.

This year’s collaboration with Precious Plastic Malaysia (PPM) encouraged participants to practise responsible waste management by providing dedicated recycling stations for plastic bottle caps and bottles.

These simple initiatives contribute towards reducing landfill waste while encouraging runners to adopt environmentally friendly habits during sporting events.

Digital registration, race information and participant communication also reduced the need for printed materials, reflecting the organisers’ long-term commitment towards greener event management.

It’s encouraging to see sustainability becoming a natural part of major sporting events rather than just an afterthought.

Bro Samurai’s Experience at IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge 2026

Bro Samurai IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge 2026

Having participated in this year’s 5KM category, I can honestly say that the Duo Highway Challenge remains one of my favourite running events in Malaysia.

Running on highways that are normally packed with vehicles feels completely different. The wide open roads, fresh morning air and beautiful city skyline create an experience that’s difficult to describe until you experience it yourself.

One of the most memorable moments was reaching the elevated highway sections just as the sun began to rise. Seeing thousands of runners moving together while the Kuala Lumpur skyline slowly lit up was simply breathtaking.

The race organisation also deserves praise. From the registration process and race pack collection to hydration stations and volunteer support, everything felt well coordinated. Water stations were easy to locate, marshals were friendly and the overall race flow remained smooth despite the large number of participants.

Crossing the finish line brought an incredible sense of satisfaction. Whether you’re chasing a personal best or simply aiming to complete your chosen distance, the atmosphere at the finishing area makes every kilometre worthwhile.

As someone who regularly joins running events around Malaysia, I genuinely feel the IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge offers an experience that is difficult to replicate elsewhere.

Looking Ahead to the 10th Edition

With the event steadily approaching its landmark 10th edition, expectations are naturally growing even higher.

IJM Corporation and Allianz Malaysia have consistently demonstrated their commitment to improving every aspect of the race—from operational excellence and participant safety to sustainability and international standards.

If this year’s event is any indication, the coming editions are likely to introduce even more innovations while maintaining the unique highway running experience that has become the event’s biggest attraction.

For anyone looking to challenge themselves, experience a professionally organised marathon and enjoy one of Malaysia’s most unique race routes, the IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge should definitely be on your running calendar.

Whether you’re an experienced marathon runner or planning your very first race, this event offers an unforgettable journey across two iconic highways that perfectly combines fitness, community spirit and world-class race organisation.
