Malaysia’s Largest Paddy Art Formation at MAHA 2026 – A Heart-Shaped Tribute to Malaysia’s Rice Heritage
What happens when a paddy field becomes a canvas? At MAHA 2026, JATI has given Malaysians a rather impressive answer.
JATI, one of Malaysia’s well-known rice brands, has made history with Natural Waves of Malaysia, a massive artwork created entirely from living paddy. The unique agricultural artwork has officially been recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) as Malaysia’s “Largest Paddy Art Formation.”
Unveiled at the Laman Padi section of the Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Show (MAHA) 2026, the artwork measures an impressive 119ft by 126ft, turning an ordinary paddy field into a giant natural canvas.
But there is more to this artwork than its record-breaking size.
A Giant Heart Made from Living Paddy
Unlike conventional outdoor artworks that use paint, dye or synthetic materials, Natural Waves of Malaysia was grown entirely from living paddy.
The artwork features a large heart shape alongside the JATI brand name, symbolising the brand’s love for Malaysian rice and appreciation for the farming communities that have helped sustain the country for generations.
The JATI logo itself measures approximately 58.42ft by 19.07ft, making it a remarkable sight when viewed across the field.
Rather than using artificial colours, JATI relied on different stages of paddy growth to create the artwork’s natural contrast. Green and golden tones emerged as the paddy matured, while younger shoots added different shades to the overall design.
The result was a living piece of agricultural art that changed naturally as the plants grew.
Inspired by the Movement of Paddy Fields
The concept behind Natural Waves of Malaysia was inspired by something familiar to anyone who has spent time around Malaysian paddy fields — the gentle movement of rice plants as they sway in the wind.
The movement creates what can look like waves across a field, with different shades of green and gold changing with the season and stage of growth.
JATI transformed this familiar agricultural sight into a large-scale artistic formation, showcasing how something as traditional as paddy farming can be presented in a completely different and imaginative way.
According to Mr. Low Kok Kean, Chairman of LK Labuan Foundation, the achievement was a proud moment for everyone involved.
The project was intended not only to celebrate paddy in a different way, but also to highlight Malaysia’s creativity and capabilities within the agricultural sector.
Months of Planning Went Into the Record
Creating a giant artwork from living paddy was certainly not as simple as drawing a picture on a field.
The project required months of planning, coordination and precision.
The design was first created using AutoCAD, with coordinates used to map out the exact proportions and positioning of the artwork. The digital design was then transferred onto the actual field using wooden stakes and ropes.
This process helped the team maintain the shape, proportions and alignment of the massive formation during planting.
The paddy seeds used for the project were MR 284, which were planted directly into the field in three carefully timed phases.
These consisted of the Yellow Phase, Green Phase and Young Paddy Shoot (Anak Padi) stage.
By planting different sections at specific times, the team was able to control the maturity of the paddy and naturally produce the various colours required for the design.
In other words, the artwork was essentially grown according to a carefully planned agricultural schedule.
Malaysia Book of Records Recognition
Following the completion of the formation, the artwork was verified by the Malaysia Book of Records before the official record was awarded.
The MBOR certificate was subsequently presented by Mr. Jwan Heah, Chief Operating Officer of the Malaysia Book of Records, to Mr. Low Kok Kean, Chairman of LK Labuan Foundation, who received the certification on behalf of JATI.
The presentation was witnessed by Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri Haji Mohamad bin Sabu, Malaysia’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security.
The recognition officially placed Natural Waves of Malaysia in the record books as the Largest Paddy Art Formation in Malaysia.
More Than Just a Record
For JATI, however, the achievement is about much more than simply securing another record.
Rice and paddy are deeply connected to Malaysian daily life. From the rice served at family meals to the generations of farmers working in the fields, the crop represents an important part of the country’s agricultural heritage.
By using paddy itself as the medium, JATI has found a creative way to celebrate that connection.
Natural Waves of Malaysia also offers a fresh perspective on agriculture, showing that a working field can become more than just a place where crops are grown. With creativity and careful planning, agriculture can also become a platform for art, storytelling and cultural expression.
At MAHA 2026, JATI has certainly managed to turn heads — and perhaps more importantly, remind Malaysians of the people and traditions behind something that appears on dining tables every single day.
A giant heart grown from paddy may sound simple at first, but behind it lies months of planning, agricultural knowledge and appreciation for Malaysia’s farming community.
And that makes JATI’s record-breaking paddy artwork a fitting tribute to the people who continue to put rice on Malaysian tables.
