Canteen Malaya Brings Fresh Seafood and Open-Kitchen Dining to Jalan Alor
Jalan Alor has welcomed a new addition to its famous food scene with the opening of Canteen Malaya, a seafood restaurant offering fresh Malaysian seafood, live selections, an open kitchen and four levels of dining space.
Officially opened on 18 September 2026, Canteen Malaya is designed to offer diners a more relaxed seafood experience while still capturing the lively spirit of one of Kuala Lumpur’s most popular food destinations.
A New Seafood Experience in the Heart of Jalan Alor
For many Malaysians and international visitors, Jalan Alor is synonymous with street food, seafood stalls and the energetic atmosphere of Kuala Lumpur at night.
Canteen Malaya takes inspiration from this familiar dining culture but brings it indoors. The restaurant offers a comfortable, air-conditioned environment where guests can sit down, enjoy their meals and take their time rather than having to follow the faster pace often associated with street-side dining.
At the heart of the restaurant’s concept is its focus on fresh seafood.
Guests can choose from a selection of live seafood before their chosen catch is prepared and cooked to order. The restaurant’s open kitchen also allows diners to watch their food being prepared, creating a more interactive dining experience.

More Than 30 Crab Flavours to Explore
Crab takes centre stage at Canteen Malaya, with more than 30 different flavours and preparations available for diners to explore.
Among these are 12 signature creations, including Salted Egg Crab, Kam Heong Crab, Sour and Spicy Crab, Indonesian Crab and White Pepper Crab.
With such a wide selection, the restaurant aims to give seafood lovers plenty of choices, whether they prefer rich and creamy flavours, spicy preparations or more traditional seafood tastes.
Beyond crab, diners can also choose from other fresh seafood options. The menu includes giant tiger prawns, fresh fish taken from the restaurant’s tanks and prepared in various styles, as well as steamed clams and squid.
The tank-to-table approach allows guests to select their seafood before it is cooked according to their preferred preparation.
A Calmer Space Inspired by Jalan Alor
While Canteen Malaya takes inspiration from Jalan Alor’s famous food culture, its interior offers a noticeably different environment.
The restaurant is designed around a central garden filled with lush greenery, while natural light enters through a skylight above. Warm wood finishes and earthy tones add to the relaxed atmosphere.
The multi-level layout also gives the restaurant a more spacious feel, creating a calmer environment within the busy surroundings of Jalan Alor.
The combination of greenery, natural light and contemporary interiors is designed to make Canteen Malaya suitable for diners looking for a longer and more comfortable meal with family, friends or colleagues.
Four Levels and Space for Up to 700 Guests
One of Canteen Malaya’s notable features is its size. The restaurant spans four levels and can accommodate up to 700 guests, making it suitable for both casual dining and larger gatherings.
The basement houses the main kitchen, while the ground floor serves as the restaurant’s primary dining area.
The first floor provides additional dining space together with private rooms, offering an option for smaller groups seeking a more private setting.
Meanwhile, the second floor features an event hall capable of accommodating up to 250 guests. This allows Canteen Malaya to cater to private functions, celebrations and larger events.
