Hektar Real Estate Investment Trust (Hektar REIT) has strengthened its commitment to environmental conservation through a mangrove tree planting initiative at Kuala Selangor Nature Park, Selangor.

Organised in collaboration with the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), the initiative saw 40 employees come together to plant 200 mangrove saplings to support habitat restoration, biodiversity conservation and coastal protection.

Held on 23 September 2026, the activity reflects Hektar REIT’s ongoing efforts to incorporate sustainability into its business operations while encouraging employees to take an active role in protecting the environment.

The conservation activity brought together 40 employees from the asset and property management companies of Hektar REIT for a hands-on environmental initiative at Kuala Selangor Nature Park.

With guidance from MNS, participants planted 200 mangrove saplings to help rehabilitate degraded areas and support the long-term health of the local mangrove ecosystem.

The planting site is located within a forest reserve, where MNS will continue to monitor and care for the newly planted mangroves. This ongoing maintenance is important to support the saplings’ growth and survival, ensuring the initiative can deliver lasting environmental benefits.

Beyond the planting activity itself, the programme also provided employees with an opportunity to learn more about the importance of mangrove ecosystems and their role in protecting Malaysia’s natural heritage.

How Mangroves Help Fight Climate Change

Mangroves play an important role in addressing climate change because of their ability to absorb and store carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere.

According to the initiative’s estimates, the 200 mangrove trees planted by Hektar REIT could contribute between 20 and 40 tonnes of carbon sequestration over their lifetime. This represents a long-term contribution to climate action through a nature-based conservation approach.

Mangroves are also recognised for their ability to store significant amounts of carbon. They can store up to four times more carbon per hectare than many tropical forests, making their protection and restoration particularly valuable in efforts to address rising atmospheric carbon levels.

However, their environmental benefits extend beyond carbon storage. Mangrove forests act as natural barriers against coastal erosion by helping stabilise shorelines and reduce the impact of waves. Their intricate root systems also provide shelter, feeding grounds and nursery habitats for various marine organisms.

These ecosystems support fish populations and other marine life, contributing to the health of coastal waters and the livelihoods of communities that depend on fisheries.

By supporting mangrove restoration, Hektar REIT is contributing to conservation efforts that benefit both the natural environment and the people who depend on it.

Collaboration with the Malaysian Nature Society

The initiative was carried out in collaboration with the Malaysian Nature Society, a non-governmental organisation dedicated to conserving Malaysia’s natural heritage and biodiversity.

MNS manages and operates Kuala Selangor Nature Park on behalf of the Selangor State Government. Its work includes environmental education, habitat conservation, research and community-based conservation programmes throughout Malaysia.

At Kuala Selangor Nature Park, mangrove restoration is one of the key activities aimed at rehabilitating degraded habitats and maintaining the health of the surrounding ecosystem.

Through its partnership with MNS, Hektar REIT was able to support an established conservation programme while providing employees with practical experience in environmental stewardship.

Zainal Iskandar, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Hektar Asset Management, said the organisation believes meaningful sustainability efforts should translate into practical action on the ground.

He highlighted how the collaboration contributes to mangrove restoration, carbon sequestration, coastline protection, biodiversity conservation and the resilience of coastal ecosystems.

He also emphasised that environmental stewardship remains an important part of Hektar REIT’s broader sustainability journey, with the organisation continuing to identify meaningful initiatives that encourage collective responsibility among its employees.

Supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Hektar REIT’s mangrove planting initiative supports three United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

These include SDG 13: Climate Action, through nature-based climate solutions and carbon sequestration; SDG 14: Life Below Water, through the conservation of coastal and marine ecosystems; and SDG 15: Life on Land, through habitat restoration and biodiversity conservation.

The initiative forms part of Hektar REIT’s wider environmental, social and governance (ESG) agenda, which focuses on integrating sustainability into its operations and generating positive environmental and social outcomes.

By planting 200 mangrove saplings and working alongside MNS, Hektar REIT is taking a practical step towards supporting Malaysia’s conservation efforts.

While the long-term impact will depend on the survival and growth of the saplings, continued monitoring and care will help ensure that the planting initiative contributes to a healthier mangrove ecosystem for future generations.
