Penang has become the stage for a rare and meaningful artistic encounter with the launch of “Picasso and Lin Xiang Xiong: A Dialogue Across Time” at the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery.
Running until 31 March 2026, this special exhibition unites two artists from vastly different eras and cultural landscapes, yet bound by a shared commitment to peace, humanity, and social responsibility.
The exhibition features over 60 works by Pablo Picasso alongside more than 300 paintings by Professor Lin Xiang Xiong, creating a sweeping visual narrative that spans more than a century of global history.
Rather than presenting art as static masterpieces, the gallery frames each piece as part of a living conversation about conflict, compassion, and the enduring hope for peace.
Two Artists, One Universal Message
Pablo Picasso, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, lived through a world torn apart by the Spanish Civil War, two World Wars, and the Cold War.

These experiences shaped his artistic voice, turning his work into a powerful form of resistance against violence and injustice. Through recurring motifs such as doves, bouquets, and expressive human faces, Picasso transformed pain and chaos into symbols of resilience and hope.
French art critic and curator Alin Avila aptly described Picasso’s legacy as one that synthesised “lucidity in horror and faith in humanity’s capacity to rebuild, create, love, and transmit.”
In this exhibition, Picasso’s lithographs, posters, and prints are not merely historical artifacts; they stand as enduring calls for peace that continue to resonate today.

Across time and geography, Professor Lin Xiang Xiong carries forward a similar mission. His emotionally charged paintings reflect a world still grappling with wars, displacement, and humanitarian crises.
While Picasso’s works capture the trauma of the 20th century, Lin’s art confronts the realities of the 21st, reminding viewers that peace is still an unfinished journey.
Lin explains that Picasso’s selected works were never meant for private collectors. They were created to circulate in society, to enter people’s lives and provoke dialogue. In that same spirit, Lin’s own paintings urge viewers not to look away from suffering, but to engage, reflect, and act.
A Curated Visual Journey of Peace

Rather than focusing on a single iconic artwork, the exhibition presents a comprehensive visual narrative built around the idea of peace. Visitors will encounter:
- Le Visage de la Paix (Face of Peace) series, where human dignity is expressed through faces
- Contrasting images of war and peace, illustrating the choices humanity must make
- Posters from peace congresses and anti-war movements, revealing how art has historically mobilised societies
- Universal symbols such as doves and flowers, reinforcing peace as a shared global language
Together, these elements form a dialogue where Picasso’s symbolic language meets Lin’s contemporary urgency. The result is not just an art show, but an evolving archive of how peace has been imagined, communicated, and defended across generations.
Why This Exhibition Matters
In an age of rapid information and constant crisis, this exhibition offers something rare: a space for quiet reflection and meaningful engagement. Professor Lin emphasises that choosing Picasso is not about artistic prestige, but about honouring his example of public responsibility.
When confronted with extreme conflict, Picasso chose to respond through art — a commitment that continues to inspire artists and audiences alike.
By placing Picasso’s works beside Lin’s, the exhibition makes one thing clear: peace is not a completed chapter in history; it is a responsibility that belongs to every generation.
