Ride Safer with Garmin Varia RearVue 820 – Malaysia’s Latest High-Power Radar Tail Light

Garmin Varia RearVue 820

Garmin Malaysia has officially unveiled the Varia RearVue 820, its brightest and most powerful radar tail light to date, designed to help cyclists ride with greater awareness and confidence on the road.

Announced on 4 February 2026, this latest addition to Garmin’s cycling safety lineup introduces smarter vehicle tracking technology, enhanced visibility features and extended battery performance — all packed into a compact, rider-friendly design.

As cycling continues to grow in popularity for commuting, training and recreation, road safety remains a top concern. The Varia RearVue 820 addresses this by going beyond traditional rear lights, transforming into a smart safety system that actively monitors traffic approaching from behind.

Advanced Vehicle Tracking for Smarter Awareness

At the heart of the Varia RearVue 820 is Garmin’s next-generation radar technology, now capable of more precise and intelligent vehicle detection.

When paired with a compatible Garmin Edge cycling computer, supported smartwatch or the Varia smartphone app, riders receive visual and audible alerts whenever vehicles approach from the rear.

This new model introduces advanced vehicle tracking, which can detect a vehicle’s size, side-to-side movement, and even assign threat levels based on how the vehicle is travelling relative to the cyclist. This means riders are not just alerted to traffic, but also given context about potential risks.

A key new feature is vehicle size detection, which categorises approaching vehicles as small, medium or large. This information appears directly on the Edge display or within the Varia app, allowing cyclists to better anticipate how surrounding traffic may behave.

With a wider field of view, the radar can detect vehicles moving across multiple lanes and from distances of more than 170 metres, giving riders earlier warnings and more time to react.

Greater Peace of Mind on Every Ride

The Varia RearVue 820 also supports same-speed tracking, notifying riders about vehicles travelling behind them at a similar speed or waiting to pass — a scenario that can be difficult to notice without constant shoulder checks.

Select Garmin smartwatches enhance the experience with vibration alerts and even voice notifications for approaching vehicles. This voice alert feature is currently available through Garmin’s Public Beta program on selected smartwatch models, adding a hands-free safety benefit.

Together, these features help cyclists stay informed about their surroundings without constantly turning their heads, making rides smoother and safer, especially on busy roads.

Garmin’s Brightest Tail Light Yet

Visibility is just as important as awareness, and the Varia RearVue 820 excels here as well. It is Garmin’s brightest radar tail light ever, visible from over 2 kilometres away, helping ensure motorists and other road users can see cyclists clearly, even from a distance.

Riders can choose from multiple lighting modes, including:

  • Day flash
  • Night flash
  • Solid mode
  • Peloton mode

Using the Varia app, cyclists can also create custom light patterns, adjusting brightness and flash duration based on their riding conditions.

Another major safety enhancement is the integrated brake light function. The device detects when a rider slows down or stops and automatically triggers a distinct flashing brake light pattern, alerting vehicles behind and improving communication on the road.

Long-Lasting Battery and Compact Design

Battery performance has also been upgraded. Cyclists can enjoy up to 24 hours of use in day flash mode and up to 30 hours in radar-only mode, making the Varia RearVue 820 suitable for long training rides, endurance events and daily commuting.

Despite its powerful technology, the device remains sleek and lightweight. It features a modern, compact design, a USB-C charging port for convenience and a new seat post mount that fits securely on most road and gravel bikes.

Pricing and Availability in Malaysia

The Garmin Varia RearVue 820 will be available in Malaysia starting March 2026 at a suggested retail price of RM1,249. Cyclists can purchase it via Garmin’s official website, Shopee, Lazada, AECO e-store, Garmin Brand Stores and authorised retailers nationwide.

With its combination of intelligent radar tracking, superior brightness, smart brake light functionality and long battery life, the Varia RearVue 820 reinforces Garmin’s commitment to helping cyclists ride more safely and confidently, whether navigating city streets or open highways.
