Zootopia 2 has made an explosive debut at the global box office, raking in an impressive US$556 million (RM2.2 billion) during its opening weekend.
This achievement marks the highest global opening of 2025, the 4th biggest opening of all time, and the largest global debut for any Disney animated film in history—surpassing even Frozen 2 in key markets like Malaysia and Thailand.
Across Southeast Asia, the momentum is equally strong. The film has already earned more than US$8 million (RM33 million), with Malaysia leading the charge at US$2 million (RM8.26 million), followed closely by Thailand at US$1.7 million.
Zootopia 2 also opened at All Industry No.1 in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, reaffirming the region’s love for Disney animation.
According to Rachel Fong, Executive Director and Studio General Manager of The Walt Disney Company Southeast Asia, the success is a testament to the film’s powerful message:
“While the first Zootopia showed that anything is possible when you believe in yourself, Zootopia 2 highlights the importance of community—what we can achieve together when we overcome our differences.”
To celebrate the film’s release, Disney rolled out a series of large-scale regional activations. These include a Zootopia-themed roving school bus visiting communities in the Philippines, a multi-station city experience through four MRT lines in Indonesia, and a special social media campaign in Thailand featuring beloved local dubbing stars.
Each initiative reflects the film’s values of unity, compassion, and diversity—brought to life through interactive fan engagement.
Zootopia Comes Alive in Malaysia
Fans in Malaysia can immerse themselves in the vibrant world of Zootopia through a themed installation at Sunway Pyramid, available until 7 December.
This lively reimagination of downtown Zootopia includes photo spots, character displays, and cinema-themed setups to welcome moviegoers into Judy and Nick’s world.
Additional shopping malls across the country have also joined in with Zootopia 2-themed decorations that encourage fans to capture fun moments with their favourite characters.
Plot Overview: A New Mystery in the Animal Metropolis
In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Zootopia 2, rookie cops Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) find themselves chasing their most complex case yet.
Trouble begins when Gary De’Snake (voiced by Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan) slithers into the city, turning Zootopia upside down with his mysterious agenda.
To solve the case, Judy and Nick must go undercover in new and unexpected parts of the metropolis—testing their teamwork, trust, and growing partnership like never before.
The film also features the voices of Idris Elba, Quinta Brunson, Andy Samberg, Nate Torrence, Patrick Warburton, and Shakira, who reprises her role as Gazelle. Behind the scenes, the movie is helmed by the Oscar®-winning trio Jared Bush, Byron Howard, and producer Yvett Merino.
Setting Up a Strong Year-End Finish for Disney
As the holiday season begins, Zootopia 2 serves as one of Disney’s biggest year-end blockbusters ahead of the highly anticipated Avatar: Fire & Ash, releasing on 18 December. Together, the films create a powerful closing slate for Disney in 2025, drawing families and movie lovers back to cinemas.
Now showing exclusively in cinemas nationwide, Zootopia 2 blends clever humour, heartfelt storytelling, thrilling action, and meaningful messages about community—making it a must-watch animated adventure for audiences of all ages.
