Malaysia’s most iconic highway running event, the IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge, is set to return bigger and better for its seventh edition on 3 August 2025.

Known as the country’s only full marathon staged entirely on closed highways, this year’s edition brings a new level of prestige, having achieved official certification from World Athletics, in collaboration with the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).

This new recognition means the challenge now joins the ranks of internationally recognised marathons, ensuring participants can confidently chase personal records, earn rankings, and have their achievements globally acknowledged.

Two Highways, One Legendary Experience

The IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge 2025 continues its tradition of offering runners the unique chance to conquer the interconnected NPE (New Pantai Expressway) and BESRAYA highways.

Participants can choose from the beginner-friendly 5km route, a half marathon, or the full marathon of 42.195km. The event is designed to be inclusive, welcoming both new and seasoned runners to experience the exhilaration of running on highways that are usually reserved for vehicles.

Under this year’s theme ‘Highway Legend’, the event celebrates every runner’s spirit of perseverance, determination, and triumph as they push their limits along Malaysia’s most unique race course.

From Local Pride to International Prestige

Since its inaugural race in 2017, the IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge has rapidly grown from a local running event into an internationally recognised fixture on the regional race calendar.

In 2024, it made headlines after setting two Malaysia Book of Records titles: First Full Marathon on a Highway and Longest Marathon Course on a Closed Highway.

With the recent World Athletics certification, the challenge further solidifies its reputation as Malaysia’s premier highway marathon, attracting runners not only from within the country but also across Southeast Asia and beyond.

Organisers are expecting over 12,000 participants, with 20% of runners anticipated to be from international backgrounds, further elevating the event’s status as a regional sporting highlight.

Commitment to Safety, Community, and Sustainability

Behind the excitement of the race lies a deeply rooted commitment to safety, community impact, and sustainability. Race director Eugene Chan of EC Pixels Asia has assured that meticulous planning has gone into ensuring safe road closures, professional pacers, hydration stations, and medical support are in place to provide a seamless running experience.

As always, NPE and BESRAYA highways, as venue sponsors, have worked closely with the Ministry of Works, Royal Malaysia Police, and Malaysian Highway Authority to ensure smooth operations and minimal inconvenience to the public during the event.

More than just a sporting event, the IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge also serves as a platform for social good. In 2025, the event will be raising awareness and funds for autism initiatives, reinforcing the organiser’s commitment to supporting underserved communities and promoting inclusivity within the running community.

Additionally, sustainability remains at the heart of the race, with eco-friendly race shirts and event materials reducing environmental impact.
