Eco-Shop Celebrates Malaysia’s Spirit Through ‘Raikan Seni Kita, Jiwa Bangsa’ Colouring Contest

Merdeka celebrations are often filled with flags, performances, decorations and community activities. But for Eco-Shop, celebrating Malaysia’s spirit also means giving young Malaysians a platform to express what the nation means to them.

As part of its nationwide ‘Raikan Seni Kita, Jiwa Bangsa’ campaign, Eco-Shop brought its Merdeka month activities to a colourful finale with a special colouring contest at the Muhibbah Community Complex in Kuala Lumpur.

Held on 14 September 2026, the event attracted close to 300 children, creating a lively environment where creativity, art and community came together in conjunction with Malaysia’s 69th Merdeka celebration.

More Than 250 Students Took Part

The colouring contest brought together 252 primary school students from more than 15 schools across Kuala Lumpur. Participants were given original artwork created by local creative collective Projek SembangSembang, which they then transformed using colours and ideas of their own.

Adding to the creative experience, the children used stationery from KREATI, Eco-Shop’s house brand, throughout the contest.

Rather than simply focusing on artistic ability, the initiative encouraged children to think about their own interpretation of Malaysia. Through colours and creativity, they were given an opportunity to express their feelings towards the country, its culture and the communities they are part of.

For Eco-Shop, this was an important part of making the Merdeka celebration meaningful for younger generations.

Out of the 252 contest participants, 55 students were selected as winners, comprising five top winners and 50 consolation winners.

The five top winners received cash prizes ranging from RM100 to RM1,500, while their schools also received prizes in the form of school enhancement funding and vouchers.

The biggest school prize went to SJK(C) Mun Choong, which received RM10,000, while SK Seri Permaisuri received RM5,000.

Students from SK Desa Petaling secured third and fourth places, with the school receiving RM3,000 in school enhancement funding for third place and RM1,000 in vouchers for fourth place.

Meanwhile, SK Kampong Bharu received RM500 in vouchers for fifth place.

The 50 consolation winners were also recognised, with each receiving a RM100 Eco-Shop voucher. Every participating school received an additional RM500 Eco-Shop voucher as a token of appreciation.

Altogether, the prizes awarded through the contest amounted to RM27,800, providing recognition not only to the young participants but also to the schools involved.

Creating Space for Young Voices

Eco-Shop Malaysia Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director Jessica Ng

According to Eco-Shop Malaysia Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director Jessica Ng, the campaign was designed to encourage young Malaysians to explore what Malaysia means to them while developing a stronger appreciation for the country’s culture, identity and shared spirit.

The colouring activity provided children with a simple yet meaningful way to communicate their perspectives through art.

For young participants, every drawing could offer a different interpretation of Malaysia. From national symbols and cultural elements to personal experiences, the artwork became a reflection of how children see the country around them.

This approach also highlights how creative activities can bring children and communities together during national celebrations.

Including Children from Welfare Homes

The event also extended beyond the 252 contest participants.

A total of 44 children from Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak-anak Yatim dan Asnaf Qaseh Ibu and Suriana Welfare Society Malaysia were invited to join the day’s colouring festivities outside of the competition.

Eco-Shop also presented contributions to the participating welfare homes as a token of appreciation.

By including children from the welfare organisations, the event became more than just a colouring competition. It provided an opportunity for different groups of children to participate in the same Merdeka celebration and enjoy a day centred around creativity and togetherness.

A Colourful Finale to the Merdeka Campaign

The colouring contest marked the finale of Eco-Shop’s ‘Raikan Seni Kita, Jiwa Bangsa’ campaign, which ran nationwide from 1 August to 30 September 2026 in conjunction with Malaysia’s 69th Merdeka celebration.

The campaign demonstrates how art can be used as a simple but engaging way to encourage children to reflect on their connection with Malaysia.

With hundreds of children coming together to colour, create and celebrate, Eco-Shop’s Merdeka initiative ended on a colourful note while giving young Malaysians the opportunity to have their voices represented through art.

After all, there is no single way to express what Malaysia means to us. Sometimes, all it takes is a blank page, a box of colours and a little imagination.
