Canon has officially introduced its latest full-frame mirrorless camera in Malaysia, the Canon EOS R8 Mark II, offering photographers and content creators a combination of portability, imaging performance and new creative tools.
Announced in Shah Alam on 17 September 2026, the EOS R8 Mark II succeeds the popular EOS R8 while bringing a fresh modern design, improved image stabilisation, faster continuous shooting and a wider selection of creative functions for both photography and video.
With its 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and compact body, the new camera is designed for users who want full-frame image quality without carrying a large and heavy camera setup.
Compact Design with a More Comfortable Handling Experience
One of the highlights of the Canon EOS R8 Mark II is its redesigned body. Canon has given the camera a sleek contemporary appearance while retaining the iconic pentaprism-inspired shape of the EOS R series.
Measuring approximately 131.4 x 90.0 x 79.7mm and weighing around 546g, the EOS R8 Mark II is positioned as Canon’s smallest and lightest full-frame mirrorless camera equipped with In-Body IS.
Despite its compact dimensions, Canon has retained an ergonomic grip to make the camera comfortable to handle during extended shooting sessions.
The EOS R8 Mark II is also the first full-frame EOS R camera in its class to feature a multi-controller joystick, a control traditionally found on Canon’s higher-end models. The joystick provides more intuitive autofocus control, including when photographers are composing their shots through the electronic viewfinder.
For users with larger hands, Canon also offers the optional Extension Grip EG-E2. The accessory can be attached or removed easily and provides additional support while also allowing tripod mounting and battery changes.
Full-Frame Sensor for Better Image Quality
At the heart of the EOS R8 Mark II is a 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor.
Compared with an APS-C sensor, the full-frame sensor provides approximately 2.5 times larger light-gathering surface. This can contribute to improved image quality and low-light performance, while helping the autofocus system capture more information with reduced image noise in challenging lighting conditions.
The full-frame format also provides a wider field of view when using the same focal length compared with an APS-C camera. This makes the EOS R8 Mark II particularly interesting for landscape, travel, architecture and environmental photography.
At the same time, photographers can take advantage of the full-frame sensor’s ability to produce attractive background and foreground blur, especially when paired with suitable RF lenses.
Up to 7.5 Stops of Image Stabilisation
Handheld shooting becomes more flexible with the camera’s built-in five-axis In-Body IS.
For situations requiring slower shutter speeds, the stabilisation system is designed to help reduce blur caused by camera movement. When used with a compatible RF lens featuring in-lens image stabilisation, Canon’s Coordinated Control IS combines the camera and lens stabilisation systems.
According to Canon, this can provide an image stabilisation effect equivalent to up to 7.5 stops at the centre and 7.0 stops at the edges.
This can be particularly useful for handheld photography in low-light environments, travel photography and other situations where carrying a tripod is inconvenient.
Capture Fast-Moving Subjects at Up to 40fps
Speed is another major feature of the EOS R8 Mark II.
The camera uses Canon’s deep learning-based Dual Pixel CMOS AF II autofocus system, together with Pre-Continuous Shooting and electronic-shutter continuous shooting of up to 40 frames per second.
This gives photographers the ability to capture a sequence of images around fast-moving subjects and select the decisive moment afterwards.
Another useful feature is Register People Priority mode. Users can register specific people and allow the autofocus system to prioritise them when tracking subjects in crowded environments.
This could prove useful for event photography, family gatherings, performances and other situations where multiple people are moving within the frame.
New Creative Features Straight Out of the Camera
Canon is also putting greater emphasis on creativity with the EOS R8 Mark II.
The camera introduces two new Colour Filters, NegativeFilmtone and PositiveFilmtone, joining the existing selection of 14 colour filters. Users can also adjust the strength of the colour filter to achieve their preferred visual appearance without relying heavily on post-processing.
For night photography, the Handheld Night Scene Mode now includes four additional colour modes: Blue, Black & Orange, Pink and Green.
The interval timer function has also been enhanced with features such as exposure smoothing, timer priority and delayed start options, giving creators more control when producing time-lapse movies.
Creative AUTO Makes Photography More Approachable
For users who are still developing their photography skills, the EOS R8 Mark II introduces Creative AUTO mode with an intuitive Creative Assist interface.
This allows photographers to experiment with different visual effects and creative settings without needing to understand every technical camera parameter immediately.
The Creative Assist concept is also extended to video through the Background Blur function. Users can create a cinematic defocus effect while recording video, with the option to set a shortcut that automatically applies a preconfigured blur and speed level.
The camera also includes Slow & Fast Motion Movie and Cinema View modes, expanding the creative possibilities available directly from the camera.
Designed for Video Creators
The EOS R8 Mark II is not limited to still photography. Canon has equipped it with a strong selection of video features aimed at creators who want greater control over their footage.
The camera can record 6K-oversampled 4K 60p video, while Full HD recording can reach up to 180p with audio.
For creators who plan to colour grade their footage, Canon Log 3 is available to provide a grading-friendly workflow.
The EOS R8 Mark II also introduces a Custom Picture function derived from Canon’s Cinema EOS lineup. It supports Custom LUTs as well as advanced picture control parameter adjustments.
Livestreaming is supported through four wired and wireless options, including multi-angle livestreaming using the Live Switcher Mobile app.
Exploring VR and 3D Content
Canon is also expanding the camera’s potential beyond conventional photography and video.
The EOS R8 Mark II is compatible with both full-frame and APS-C VR lenses and supports the new VR Clear Mode. This mode is designed to optimise contrast and clarity when viewing content through VR goggles.
The camera also supports still-photo-to-3D conversion through Canon’s new Dual Pixel 3D Converter software. The software uses distance information obtained through Canon’s sensor-based Dual Pixel CMOS AF system to create a 3D model from a captured scene.
These features provide photographers and creators with additional ways to experiment with immersive content.
New Accessories for the EOS R8 Mark II
Alongside the new camera, Canon has announced three accessories.
The Extension Grip EG-E2 is designed to provide additional handling support, particularly for users with larger hands.
Canon is also introducing the Tripod Grip HG-1000TBR, a multifunction tripod grip bundled with the Bluetooth Remote Controller BR-E2.
Meanwhile, the Speedlite EL-5 (Ver. 2) is an updated version of the Speedlite EL-5. The new version offers an increased wireless communication range of approximately 50 metres, compared with 30 metres on the previous model.

With the EOS R8 Mark II, Canon is combining a compact and lightweight body with full-frame imaging, advanced autofocus, high-speed continuous shooting and a growing collection of creative tools.
