Whalefall: Epic Survival Thriller Set to Hit Cinemas on October 15, 2026
20th Century Studios and Imagine Entertainment are bringing an intense underwater survival story to the big screen with Whalefall, an upcoming thriller based on the acclaimed novel by Daniel Kraus. Following its world premiere in Hollywood, the film is set to open exclusively in cinemas on October 15, 2026.
Hollywood Hosts the World Premiere of Whalefall
Hollywood Boulevard came alive with a blue carpet outside the El Capitan Theatre for the film’s world premiere, bringing together the cast, filmmakers and creative team behind this highly anticipated production.
The event featured a special photo opportunity with a giant sperm whale head, reflecting the film’s central theme and the extraordinary danger faced by its main character.
Among those attending were Austin Abrams, Josh Brolin, Elisabeth Shue and John Ortiz, alongside director, co-writer and producer Brian Duffield and author and co-writer Daniel Kraus.
The production team also included producers Brian Grazer and Allan Mandelbaum, executive producer Doug Merrifield, production designer Ramsey Avery, costume designer Natalie O’Brien, visual effects supervisor Guillaume Rocheron and composer Joseph Trapanese.
A Desperate Fight for Survival Inside a Giant Whale
Whalefall follows Jay Gardiner, played by Austin Abrams, a young man dealing with the death of his father, portrayed by Josh Brolin.
Seeking his father’s remains, Jay ventures into the waters off the central coast of California for a diving expedition. However, his search takes a horrifying turn when he is swallowed by a massive sperm whale.
Trapped inside the whale’s belly, Jay faces a seemingly impossible challenge. With only one hour of oxygen remaining, he must find a way to escape before time runs out.
As the situation becomes increasingly desperate, Jay begins to understand that the lessons his father taught him may hold the key to his survival.
Beyond its high-stakes premise, the story explores the complicated relationship between a father and son, grief, personal growth and the strength required to keep fighting when all hope seems lost.
An Acclaimed Novel Comes to the Big Screen
Directed by Brian Duffield, Whalefall features a screenplay written by Duffield and Daniel Kraus, based on Kraus’s novel of the same name.
The film also stars Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy and Emily Rudd, bringing together a cast tasked with delivering the emotional depth and tension behind this extraordinary survival story.
With its claustrophobic setting, ticking-clock premise and emotional family drama, Whalefall offers a different take on the survival thriller genre.
Moviegoers can look forward to an intense cinematic experience as Jay struggles against time, nature and his own fears in a desperate attempt to make it back alive.
Whalefall opens exclusively in cinemas on October 15, 2026.
