Bathing Carnival Bhutan 2026 Returns to PemaGatshel for a Celebration of Water, Culture and Adventure
Bhutan is preparing to make a splash once again as the Bathing Carnival Bhutan (BCB) returns for its second edition from 6 to 8 November 2026 at Telung, Nganglam, in PemaGatshel.
Organised by the Department of Tourism, Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Employment, in collaboration with the PemaGatshel Dzongkhag Administration, the three-day festival promises a refreshing combination of water-based activities, local culture, outdoor adventure, entertainment and community experiences.
With the theme “Celebrating the Joy of Water,” Bathing Carnival Bhutan offers travellers another reason to explore eastern Bhutan while experiencing a destination that remains relatively undiscovered by international visitors.
Inspired by Bhutan’s Blessed Water Tradition
At the heart of Bathing Carnival Bhutan is the ancient Bhutanese tradition of Thruebab, or Blessed Rainy Day, which celebrates the significance of water and its connection to purification, renewal, well-being and happiness.
Bathing in naturally occurring blessed water has long been part of Bhutanese culture. Water represents life, memory, renewal and joy, making it a meaningful foundation for a modern festival that brings together people, nature and tradition.
Following the first edition, this year’s carnival continues the spirit of Thruebab while presenting the tradition in a more contemporary and interactive format. Visitors can experience the cultural significance of blessed waters while enjoying a lively programme designed for people of all ages.
Water Activities, Games and Outdoor Fun
The Bathing Carnival Bhutan 2026 programme is packed with activities designed to get visitors outdoors and involved.
Among the highlights are the tug of water war, mass bathing, water fighting and a bucket relay race with water. These playful activities are expected to bring plenty of excitement while encouraging visitors and local communities to celebrate together.
For those looking for something different, the carnival will also feature a fly fishing masher hunt, offering visitors the opportunity to experience the natural environment and waterways of eastern Bhutan.
The fun continues with a range of skill-based games, including balloon shooting, ring throwing and a water balloon throwball competition, alongside other activities throughout the three-day celebration.
As evening arrives, the atmosphere will shift towards entertainment with a laser light show, creating a colourful finale to the day’s outdoor activities.
A Taste of Local Culture
While water is at the centre of the festival, Bathing Carnival Bhutan is also about discovering the living culture and traditions of eastern Bhutan.
Visitors can explore local markets and discover traditional crafts and products, including Tsatshi Buram, a local sugar candy. Demonstrations of traditional musical instruments such as Dung and Jaling will also provide an opportunity to learn more about Bhutan’s cultural heritage.
Food lovers can look forward to a Valley Fruit Feast, while bamboo mat dining adds another distinctive local touch to the festival experience.
The celebration will conclude with a final group dance, bringing participants and communities together in the spirit of friendship, happiness and togetherness.

Often described as the Lotus Valley of eastern Bhutan, PemaGatshel offers travellers an opportunity to move beyond the country’s more familiar destinations and experience a quieter and more intimate side of Bhutan.

The carnival also highlights the close collaboration between PemaGatshel and neighbouring Mongar Dzongkhag.
Mongar Dzongdag Lungten Jamtsho described Bathing Carnival 2.0 as a celebration of eastern Bhutan’s living heritage, combining ancient traditions, pristine rivers and majestic landscapes with opportunities for cultural renewal and outdoor adventure.
The region is also recognised for its fly fishing opportunities, giving adventure travellers another reason to explore the waterways of eastern Bhutan.
Looking ahead, the organisers have confirmed that from 2027 onwards, Bathing Carnival Bhutan will take place annually from 1 to 3 November at Telung, PemaGatshel.
For 2026, the November dates were selected while taking into consideration the 108 Project in Gelephu Mindfulness City and the significance of this important Royal initiative.
