Emirates continues to lead the way in inclusive travel with the global expansion of its Travel Rehearsal programme. Over the past year, the airline has successfully conducted more than 40 sessions across six continents, helping over 250 families with autism better prepare for air travel and reduce anxiety.
This initiative reflects Emirates’ long-standing commitment to accessibility and inclusion, ensuring that more individuals—regardless of their needs—can experience the joy of travel with confidence.
From Pilot Initiative to Global Programme
What began as a local initiative in Dubai has now evolved into a fully structured global programme. Following overwhelmingly positive feedback from families, educators, and autism organisations, Emirates formalised the Travel Rehearsal initiative to expand its reach.
Since April 2025, sessions have been held in cities around the world, including London, Paris, Sydney, Toronto, and Bali, among many others. This rapid expansion highlights the growing demand for inclusive travel solutions and the airline’s ability to scale meaningful initiatives globally.
What is a Travel Rehearsal?
For many individuals with autism, air travel can be overwhelming due to unfamiliar environments, loud noises, and unpredictable processes. Recognising this, Emirates designed Travel Rehearsals to simulate the airport journey in a safe and supportive setting.
Participants are guided through key travel steps such as check-in, baggage drop, immigration, and security screening. They are also introduced to airport surroundings, including retail and dining areas, allowing them to become familiar with the environment.
In some locations, participants even have the opportunity to board an aircraft, meet airline staff, and experience the cabin environment firsthand. Mock boarding passes are provided to make the experience as realistic as possible.
Empowering Confidence Through Preparation
Preparation and predictability are essential for many neurodiverse individuals. By allowing participants to experience the journey in advance, Travel Rehearsals help reduce fear and uncertainty.
Parents, teachers, and therapists have reported significant improvements in confidence among participants. Many families who previously avoided air travel are now considering it as a viable option.
One parent shared that the programme provided “a road to freedom” for their child, while another expressed newfound confidence after avoiding travel for over a decade.
Building a Supportive Ecosystem
A key factor behind the programme’s success is the collaboration between Emirates and its partners. Airport authorities, security teams, schools, and autism centres all play a role in ensuring each session is well-coordinated and supportive.
Internally, Emirates has also invested heavily in training its workforce. More than 35,000 staff members have been trained to support customers with autism, equipping them with the skills needed to provide assistance throughout the travel journey.
This combination of external collaboration and internal capability-building ensures a consistent and positive experience for participants worldwide.
Real Stories, Real Impact
Feedback from participants highlights the profound impact of the programme. Children have described the experience as exciting and empowering, while parents have praised the thoughtful planning and compassionate approach.
Teachers and autism group leaders have also noted how the programme creates a safe space for students to learn and explore. For many, it represents more than just an airport experience—it is a step toward independence and inclusion.
Moments such as meeting flight crews, exploring aircraft cabins, and receiving small gifts contribute to making the experience memorable and meaningful.
Beyond the Airport Experience
Emirates’ commitment to neurodiverse travellers extends beyond Travel Rehearsals. As the world’s first autism-certified airline, it offers a range of onboard support tools, including sensory products and fidget toys available across all cabin classes.
Additionally, the airline has developed an Accessible & Inclusive Travel Hub on its website, providing comprehensive resources for travellers with different needs. This includes guides, airport maps, and step-by-step travel information designed to reduce anxiety before and during the journey.
A Step Towards Inclusive Travel
The success of the Travel Rehearsal programme demonstrates the importance of inclusive design in the travel industry. By addressing the unique challenges faced by neurodiverse individuals, Emirates is helping to make air travel more accessible for everyone.
As the programme continues to expand throughout 2026, more families around the world will have the opportunity to experience travel in a way that feels safe, comfortable, and empowering.
Ultimately, Emirates is not just helping people travel—it is opening doors to new experiences, connections, and possibilities, ensuring that no one is left behind in the journey of exploration.
