Emirates has once again made global aviation headlines with a massive fleet expansion announcement at the Dubai Airshow 2025.
The airline revealed that it has placed orders for 65 additional Boeing 777-9 aircraft, powered by the next-generation GE9X engines, bringing the total value of the new deal to US$38 billion at list prices.
This move further strengthens Emirates’ position as the world’s largest operator and customer of the Boeing 777 family.
With this new order, Emirates’ total Boeing orderbook now stands at 315 widebody aircraft, reflecting long-term investment in fleet renewal, technological advancement, and future route expansion.
The updated count includes 270 Boeing 777Xs, 10 777 freighters, and 35 Boeing 787s. In parallel, the airline’s commitment to GE Aerospace increases to 540 GE9X engines, including the 130 units confirmed today.
A Strategic Move Backing Boeing’s 777-10 Feasibility Study
A key highlight of the announcement is Emirates’ flexibility to convert its latest 777-9 orders into the upcoming 777-10 or 777-8 variants.
This optionality provides strong industry support for Boeing’s 777-10 feasibility study — a model designed to meet demand for higher-capacity, more efficient long-haul aircraft.
HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline & Group, emphasized that this expansion aligns closely with Dubai’s long-term aviation roadmap.
He reiterated Emirates’ continued expectation for manufacturers to develop larger, more efficient aircraft to keep up with surging global air traffic.
“Flying a young and modern fleet with innovative cabin products has always been a cornerstone of Emirates’ strategy. We look forward to receiving our first 777-9 aircraft from Q2 2027.”
Strengthening Partnerships with Boeing and GE Aerospace
The announcement further solidifies Emirates’ four-decade-long relationship with both Boeing and GE.
Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, highlighted Emirates’ crucial role in supporting the Boeing 777X programme’s development and global adoption. She described Emirates as a longstanding partner with unmatched operational excellence.
Similarly, GE Aerospace’s President & CEO Russell Stokes reaffirmed the company’s commitment to powering Emirates’ future fleet. He highlighted that Emirates is already the largest customer for GE90 and GP7200 engines, and the expanded GE9X order demonstrates deep confidence in GE’s technology and engineering capabilities.
A Legacy of Operating Every Boeing 777 Variant
Across its 40-year history, Emirates has operated every model within the Boeing 777 family. Today, the airline flies the world’s largest 777 fleet, consisting of:
- 119 Boeing 777-300ER
- 10 Boeing 777-200LR
- 11 Boeing 777 freighters
These aircraft connect Dubai to more than 140 destinations across six continents, supporting global mobility, trade, and tourism.
With the new 777X orders extending expected deliveries through 2038, Emirates strengthens its position as the backbone of long-haul international travel.
