Malaysia’s homegrown shaker fries brand, Happy Potato, has achieved a significant milestone by expanding into four new international markets within just six months.
The rapid growth has brought the brand’s total network to 126 outlets across five countries, marking the fastest expansion period since the company was founded seven years ago.
From its humble beginnings in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Happy Potato has transformed into one of Malaysia’s most successful food franchise brands, proving that local businesses can compete and thrive on the international stage.
From a Single Outlet in Sabah to a Regional Brand
Happy Potato’s journey began in 2019 with a single outlet located at Suria Sabah in Kota Kinabalu. At the time, the brand focused on offering freshly prepared shaker fries with unique seasoning flavours, creating a simple yet memorable snacking experience for customers.
The company expanded into Peninsular Malaysia in 2023 and quickly gained momentum through an aggressive franchise development strategy. Over the next two years, Happy Potato strengthened its presence nationwide and became one of the largest homegrown shaker fries chains in the country.
Today, the brand operates 117 outlets throughout Malaysia, nearly doubling its local network during the past six months alone.
Entering Four New International Markets

The year 2026 has been a landmark year for Happy Potato’s international ambitions.
The company first entered Bangladesh in February 2026 before expanding into Indonesia later that same month. In May, Happy Potato officially launched its operations in China, followed by the opening of a second Chinese outlet in June.
Most recently, the company entered Cambodia in July while simultaneously opening its third outlet in Bangladesh.
As of July 2026, Happy Potato’s international footprint includes:
- 3 outlets in Bangladesh
- 2 outlets in Indonesia
- 2 outlets in China
- 2 outlets in Cambodia
- 117 outlets across Malaysia
This expansion demonstrates the growing appeal of Malaysian food and beverage brands in regional markets, particularly within Asia’s fast-growing franchise industry.
Building a Scalable Franchise Model
According to Happy Potato CEO and co-founder Edmund Lim, the company’s rapid expansion did not happen overnight.
Instead, it was the result of years spent refining franchise operations, business systems, and brand positioning before venturing overseas.
Lim explained that opening new outlets is only one aspect of growth. Ensuring consistent product quality, customer experience, and service standards across different countries presents a much greater challenge.
Every market has unique business conditions, consumer preferences, and operational requirements. By working closely with local franchise partners and implementing structured operating systems, Happy Potato has been able to maintain consistency while adapting to local market needs.
This approach has allowed the company to scale rapidly without compromising the quality that customers expect from the brand.
Ambitious Growth Plans Towards 2028
While the recent expansion is impressive, Happy Potato believes this is only the beginning.
The company’s long-term vision includes reaching 200 stores across Malaysia by 2028 while continuing to expand throughout Asia. Under its strategic growth plan, the brand is targeting entry into an additional three to five countries over the coming years.
For a Malaysian-born franchise that started with a single outlet in Sabah, the achievement highlights the growing potential of local F&B brands to establish themselves internationally.
As consumer demand for convenient snack concepts continues to rise across the region, Happy Potato appears well-positioned to capitalise on this trend.
Celebrating Seven Years of Success
Happy Potato recently celebrated its seventh anniversary alongside World Fries Day on July 13 through a special “Unlimited Free Flow Shaker Fries” promotion at Sunway Square Mall in Bandar Sunway.
The celebration was held in collaboration with McCain Foods, one of the world’s leading producers of premium potato products.
The event not only commemorated the company’s achievements over the past seven years but also served as a platform to strengthen customer engagement and brand loyalty.
Why Consistency Matters
For Director and co-founder Colleen Phang, maintaining product quality remains one of the company’s highest priorities.
She highlighted that French fries are among the most temperature-sensitive products in the food and beverage industry. Even minor disruptions in the cold chain can affect texture, flavour, and crispiness.
To ensure consistency across all markets, Happy Potato works closely with McCain Foods and uses specially engineered fries featuring a crispy coating technology. This helps retain crispiness for longer while preserving a fluffy interior and authentic potato flavour.
The partnership enables customers to enjoy the same quality experience whether they visit a Happy Potato outlet in Malaysia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, China, or Cambodia.
The New Happy Shake Campaign
Following the anniversary celebration, Happy Potato has launched its latest nationwide promotion called the “Happy Shake” campaign, running until September 8 across all Malaysian outlets.
The campaign introduces a more interactive experience by allowing customers to shake and season their own fries.
Available at RM9.90 for an à la carte serving or RM5.90 through a combo meal Purchase-with-Purchase (PWP) offer, the campaign also includes a lucky draw and social media challenge where customers can win weekly and grand prizes.
The initiative reflects Happy Potato’s commitment to creating fun and engaging experiences while continuing to innovate within its signature shaker fries concept.
A Malaysian Success Story with Regional Potential
Happy Potato’s expansion into four new countries within six months represents more than just business growth. It showcases the strength of Malaysian entrepreneurship and the increasing global appeal of locally developed food brands.
With 126 outlets across five countries and ambitious plans for further regional expansion, Happy Potato is proving that a brand born in Sabah can successfully compete on the international stage.
As the company moves towards its 2028 goals, it remains focused on the same principles that drove its early success: quality, consistency, and delivering great fries to customers wherever they are.
