Fans of surreal action games have plenty to celebrate as Hotel Barcelona has officially rolled out its massive “Under New Management” update on March 5. The update introduces a wide range of gameplay improvements, balance changes, and exciting crossover content that significantly enhances the overall experience.
Developed by two legendary Japanese creators, Hidetaka Suehiro (commonly known as SWERY) and Goichi Suda, the game first launched in September 2025. Known for their unconventional storytelling styles in titles like Deadly Premonition and Romeo is a Dead Man, the creators brought their unique creative energy into this chaotic, horror-inspired roguelite adventure.
Now, with the new update, the team has refined the experience based on community feedback, delivering the version of the game they originally envisioned.
A Faster and More Fluid Combat System
One of the most noticeable changes in the “Under New Management” update is the overhaul of the combat system. Players will immediately feel smoother gameplay thanks to faster recovery from attacks and improved cancel timing. This means attacks can now transition more easily into jumps, dodges, guards, or follow-up strikes, allowing for a more aggressive and dynamic combat style.
Attack animations have also been shortened, while stamina consumption has been adjusted to reduce unnecessary friction during battles. Dodge mechanics have been improved with increased base dodge distance and rebalanced dodge skills, giving players better mobility when facing the hotel’s deadly enemies.
Another major highlight is the fully reworked parry system. Players who time their guard perfectly will now trigger a parry, rewarding them with HP Recovery Orbs. However, guarding now consumes stamina, forcing players to carefully manage their defensive choices. Several new parry-related skills have also been added to the skill tree, along with a brand-new skill called Enhancement Luck+.
Weapon balance has also received attention, including adjustments to powerful tools like the flamethrower.
Enemy and Stage Rebalancing
Beyond combat mechanics, the update also includes significant balancing across enemies and stages. Enemy health, attack ranges, and reaction speeds have been adjusted across multiple enemy types, making encounters more engaging and fair.
Some gameplay elements have also been modified for smoother progression. For example, the Phantom Lost mechanic has been removed from Normal difficulty and below, making the early experience more accessible for new players.
Boss battles have also received tweaks. Encounters with bosses such as Jacob, Nigel, and Eve have been rebalanced with adjustments to durability and behaviour patterns. These changes are designed to maintain challenge while ensuring fights feel more satisfying.
Environmental improvements have also been implemented. Terrain layouts, camera distance, and door placements in certain stages have been optimized to create a smoother gameplay flow.
Multiplayer Invasion System Improvements
The game’s invasion-style multiplayer system has also been refined to reduce frustration and improve fairness.
Previously, players with vastly different progression levels could create imbalanced invasions. The new update addresses this by reducing the impact of progression gaps between players.
Additional adjustments include improved parry reactions during player encounters, preventing doppelgängers from invading during boss fights, and stopping them from interfering with enemies or environmental systems.
Matchmaking and multiplayer user interface improvements have also been introduced to create a more streamlined experience for players exploring the hotel together.
Quality of Life and Performance Enhancements
Beyond gameplay changes, the update also focuses heavily on quality-of-life improvements. Performance across the entire game has been optimized, ensuring smoother gameplay across supported platforms.
The update also adds DUALSHOCK controller support, improving accessibility for players who prefer console-style controls.
Several additional improvements include:
- A redesigned prologue tutorial
- Enhanced UI layouts
- Dialogue autoplay features
- Fixes to animations, achievements, journal entries, boss encounters, and localization
These updates collectively improve the overall polish of the game.
Five New Playable Skins Featuring Indie Crossovers
One of the most fun additions in the update is the introduction of five brand-new playable skins, all available free for players.
These skins feature crossover characters inspired by other indie titles and surreal projects:
- Demoschool Faye – A cult indie crossover character appearing inside the twisted hotel world
- Slitterhead Alex – A horror-themed skin with a sharp, striking combat silhouette
- Slitterhead Julee – Another crossover from Slitterhead that stands out visually during combat
- Promise Mascot Agency Pinky – A surreal mascot character dropped into the violent chaos of the hotel
- Promise Mascot Agency Michi – A companion mascot skin that amplifies the game’s bizarre tone
These additions add a fun layer of personality while celebrating indie gaming culture.

A Brutal Roguelite Where Death is Only the Beginning
At its core, Hotel Barcelona remains a chaotic roguelite experience filled with dark humour, violent action, and bizarre storytelling. Players must fight their way through floors of a nightmarish hotel packed with serial killers inspired by VHS-era horror icons.
The game’s unique 2.5D action system means danger can come from multiple directions, requiring players to use tactical movement, careful timing, and strategic abilities to survive.
As players fight, their character becomes increasingly covered in blood, fueling the Skull Gauge. Once fully charged, players can unleash Carnival Awakening, a devastating special attack capable of turning the tide of battle.
Perhaps the most intriguing mechanic is the game’s approach to death. When players die, their previous character becomes a shadowy ally in future runs, adding a ghostly layer of revenge and progression to the roguelite system.
With the “Under New Management” update, Hotel Barcelona is now more polished, balanced, and chaotic than ever—making it the perfect time for new players to check in. Returning players, meanwhile, will find a much smoother and more refined experience waiting inside the hotel’s blood-stained halls.
