The Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery in Penang has officially launched its inaugural photography competition, inviting photographers to explore the relationship between artistic spaces and architecture through the lens.
Organised in collaboration with the Photographic Society of Penang, the competition carries the theme “The Harmony of Art and Architecture” and offers a total prize pool of RM20,000.
Beyond being a typical photography contest, the initiative aims to encourage creative storytelling while highlighting the role of art in fostering social awareness, cultural appreciation, and humanistic values. Participants are invited to capture visual narratives that reflect peace, inclusivity, and the harmony between people and spaces.
Celebrating Art, Architecture, and Human Connection
The photography competition takes inspiration from the architectural beauty and artistic environment of the 8,000-square-metre Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery. Located in Penang, the gallery serves as both an artistic landmark and a cultural hub where art, architecture, and community engagement intersect.
According to the organisers, photography has the power to transform everyday moments into meaningful visual narratives. Through this competition, photographers are encouraged to document the emotional warmth of spaces while reflecting on how art can inspire calmness and balance in today’s fast-paced world.
“Art should enter everyday life and engage with reality,” the organisers shared. “Through photography, participants can rediscover tranquillity and capture the spirit of harmony that connects people and places.”
Attractive Prize Pool Worth RM20,000
To recognise outstanding talent, the organisers have prepared a generous reward structure totalling RM20,000. The competition will award prizes across several categories:
- First Prize: RM5,000 and certificate
- Second Prize: RM3,000 and certificate
- Third Prize: RM2,000 and certificate
- Merit Prize: RM500 each for 10 winners plus certificates
- Consolation Prize: RM250 each for 20 winners plus certificates
In addition to the cash prizes, winning photographers will gain the opportunity to showcase their works at the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery, where they can reach an international audience. Selected images may also be featured in the gallery’s official architectural commemorative photobook, offering further recognition for participants.
Unique Submission Format: A Story Told in Five Images
One of the distinctive aspects of this competition is its focus on visual storytelling through a series of photographs. Instead of submitting a single image, participants are required to present five interconnected photos that form a cohesive narrative.
Each series should reflect themes of hope, coexistence, and inclusivity, while covering two key perspectives:
Interior Spaces – Photographers should capture the artistic ambience and humanistic elements within the gallery’s interior spaces, highlighting the atmosphere created by art and architecture.
Exterior Architecture – Participants are also encouraged to showcase the building’s architectural design and its harmonious relationship with Penang’s surrounding coastal landscape.
By combining these perspectives, photographers can create a deeper and more immersive visual story that reflects both the artistic spirit of the gallery and its connection with nature.
Competition Timeline and Requirements
The photography competition will run for three months from 1 March to 31 May 2026. It is open to the public aged 18 years and above, welcoming both amateur and professional photographers.
Participants must submit one series consisting of five photographs, each connected by a common narrative. All images must follow the required technical specifications, including JPEG format, minimum resolution of 300 dpi, and a size of 8 × 12 inches.
To protect the artworks and exhibition environment, flash photography is strictly prohibited within the gallery premises. Additionally, all submitted images must be original works, and excessive digital manipulation beyond the permitted editing guidelines will result in disqualification.
How to Participate
Interested photographers can register and submit their entries through the official online registration form. Once registered, participants will receive a Synology NAS upload link to submit their photo series.
