Japanese food lovers, anime fans, music enthusiasts and anyone fascinated by Japanese culture have something exciting to look forward to this October. Nihon Matsuri 2026 is returning to Kuala Lumpur from 22 to 25 October 2026, bringing the vibrant atmosphere of Osaka’s famous Dotonbori district to XOX Arena, The Arch Galeries Kuala Lumpur.
Held annually since 2022, Nihon Matsuri continues to celebrate Japanese food, culture, entertainment and culinary craftsmanship. This year’s edition introduces a fresh concept inspired by Dotonbori, one of Osaka’s most recognisable destinations for street food, nightlife and entertainment.
Proudly supported by the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO), the festival promises four days of Japanese-inspired experiences, exciting culinary showcases, live performances and unique attractions for visitors to enjoy.
Experience Malaysia’s First Standing Omakase
One of the biggest highlights of Nihon Matsuri 2026 is what organisers describe as Malaysia’s first Standing Omakase. Reimagining the traditional omakase dining experience in a lively festival setting, this special attraction offers guests a chance to enjoy Japanese culinary craftsmanship in a more interactive environment.
The five-course experience will feature premium seafood flown directly from Japan. Visitors can look forward to carefully prepared dishes while observing the precision and techniques that make Japanese cuisine so special.
For food enthusiasts who appreciate fresh seafood and authentic Japanese flavours, this could be one of the festival’s most memorable experiences.
POP Wasabi Awards 2026 Celebrates Sushi Craftsmanship
Nihon Matsuri 2026 will also introduce the inaugural POP Wasabi Awards 2026, a sushi competition presented by Sendo Ichi Seafoods.
Six promising sushi chefs representing selected Japanese restaurants will compete to demonstrate their technical skills, creativity, precision and understanding of premium ingredients.
The competition will be judged by a distinguished panel featuring sushi master Sam Saito of Sushi Hibiki, a Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassador appointed by Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF). Renowned Malaysian chef Chef Wan and Andrea Wong, Creative Director, fashion stylist and Editor-in-Chief of Palate Asia, will also join the judging panel.
The competition brings together different perspectives on Japanese cuisine, presentation and creativity, offering visitors an opportunity to appreciate the dedication behind exceptional sushi-making.
A Record-Breaking Oyster Bar and Live Tuna-Cutting Show
Seafood lovers will have even more reasons to visit, as Nihon Matsuri 2026 plans to attempt a place in the Malaysia Book of Records with the Longest Oyster Bar.
The ambitious showcase aims to celebrate fresh oysters and Malaysia’s growing appreciation for Japanese seafood.
Visitors can also witness a live tuna-cutting demonstration, where master chefs will demonstrate the traditional techniques involved in breaking down a whole tuna. Freshly cut tuna will be available for purchase, giving guests the opportunity to enjoy the seafood showcased during the demonstration.
These attractions add an exciting culinary dimension to the festival, combining entertainment with a closer look at the skills and traditions behind Japanese food.
Enjoy Japanese and Malaysian Live Performances
Beyond its food attractions, Nihon Matsuri 2026 features a weekend lineup of Japanese and Malaysian performers.
Japanese rock band I Don’t Like Mondays. will perform on Friday, 23 October, at 8:00 PM in Hall B. The performance is included with regular Nihon Matsuri admission, allowing festival visitors to enjoy the show without purchasing a separate concert ticket.
