Selangor Red Giants Make MPL Malaysia History with Record-Breaking Five-Peat

Selangor Red Giants Make MPL Malaysia History

Malaysian esports witnessed another historic milestone as Selangor Red Giants (SRG) etched their name into the record books by becoming the first team in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League (MPL) history to secure five consecutive championship titles.

The remarkable achievement came at the conclusion of MPL Malaysia Season 17, where SRG delivered a dominant 4-0 victory over Team Vamos (VMS) during the Grand Finals held at Stadium Juara, Kuala Lumpur.

Played in front of a packed crowd on the inaugural CelcomDigi Dream Stage, the victory further solidifies SRG’s status as one of the greatest dynasties in Malaysian esports.

Beyond the championship result, Season 17 also marked a new era for MPL Malaysia as the league completed its first season under the newly introduced Partnership Programme, setting a new benchmark for competitive excellence, institutional support, and fan engagement.

Selangor Red Giants Continue Their Dominance

Heading into the Grand Finals, both Selangor Red Giants and Team Vamos had already secured qualification to the MLBB Mid Season Cup (MSC) at the Esports World Cup (EWC) 2026 in Paris.

However, the battle for the MPL Malaysia crown remained the ultimate prize. SRG entered the match as favourites and lived up to expectations by producing a flawless performance.

The defending champions showcased exceptional teamwork, discipline, and strategic execution throughout the series, leaving little room for Team Vamos to mount a comeback. The 4-0 sweep not only secured the title but also established a historic five-peat, a feat never before achieved in MPL history.

The victory reinforces SRG’s position as the team to beat in Malaysia and places them among the strongest contenders heading into international competition later this year.

MPL Malaysia Continues Its Upward Growth

While SRG’s historic achievement dominated headlines, MPL Malaysia Season 17 also celebrated impressive growth in viewership and audience engagement.

According to Esports Charts, the season generated more than 25.8 million hours watched, alongside a Peak Concurrent Viewership (PCV) of 740,146 and an average concurrent viewership of 148,713.

Compared to Season 16, total watch hours nearly doubled, while peak viewership increased by more than 23 percent. Average viewership also grew by an impressive 56.82 percent.

These figures further strengthen MPL Malaysia’s position as one of Southeast Asia’s most popular and watched esports leagues.

The five-day playoff event attracted over 12,000 spectators, including ticket holders and visitors attending the inaugural MPL Malaysia Festival presented by EsportsCon. The festival was organised in collaboration with Esports Integrated (ESI) and Malaysia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS).

A New Chapter Through the Partnership Programme

Season 17 will also be remembered as the first season under MPL Malaysia’s Partnership Programme.

The long-term initiative is built around eight partner organisations that serve as the foundation of the league’s future growth. Together with the launch of the CelcomDigi Dream Stage, the programme represents a significant step forward for the Malaysian esports ecosystem.

The Dream Stage serves as the ultimate destination for aspiring esports athletes, where the nation’s best players compete for championships and international qualification while bringing together esports, entertainment, and youth culture on a single platform.

The success of MPL Malaysia Season 17 was further highlighted by the strong support shown by government leaders and industry stakeholders.

Among those in attendance were Deputy Minister of Higher Education YB Adam Adli bin Abd Halim and Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports YB Mordi anak Bimol, reflecting the growing recognition of esports as an important part of Malaysia’s youth and digital economy agenda.

YB Adam Adli emphasised the importance of aligning higher education programmes with the needs of the esports industry. He highlighted opportunities to strengthen collaboration between educational institutions and industry leaders through initiatives such as TVET and SUKIPT to develop industry-ready graduates.

Meanwhile, YB Mordi praised MPL Malaysia for creating an inclusive platform that brings together players, fans, communities, and families while nurturing important values such as teamwork, leadership, communication, and resilience.

He also noted the significance of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang becoming an official medal event at the 2026 Asian Games, describing it as a major milestone for Malaysian esports athletes.

One of the standout highlights of the Grand Finals weekend was the launch of the CelcomDigi Dream Stage.

Created as a celebration of esports, sports, music, and youth culture, the stage represents the culmination of each MPL Malaysia season and serves as a platform for Malaysia’s top talents to shine.

As a long-standing MPL Malaysia partner, CelcomDigi worked closely with the league to bring fans a more immersive and entertaining live experience.

The inaugural edition featured an appearance by Malaysia’s legendary Queen of Rock, Ella, whose performance elevated the event beyond esports and into a broader cultural celebration.

The Dream Stage also served as the official send-off platform for Malaysia’s representatives heading to international tournaments including the MSC, MLBB Women’s Invitational (MWI), and the 2026 Asian Games.

Adding to the significance of the occasion was the appearance of Malaysia national netball captain Nurfariha Abdul Razak, symbolising the growing connection between traditional sports and esports.

MPL Malaysia Festival Enhances the Fan Experience

The first-ever MPL Malaysia Festival further enriched the playoff experience through a variety of activities and community-focused programmes.

Visitors enjoyed team parades, meet-and-greet sessions, industry panels, watch parties, and a dedicated food village throughout the five-day event.

The ESI Esports Exchange Panel and Rakita GG Podcaster Search also provided opportunities for aspiring creators and industry professionals to engage with Malaysia’s growing esports ecosystem.

These initiatives demonstrate MPL Malaysia’s ambition to evolve beyond a competitive league and become a cultural platform that celebrates gaming, creativity, and community engagement.

Eyes on the Global Stage

With Season 17 now complete, attention turns towards the MLBB Mid Season Cup at the Esports World Cup 2026 in Paris.

Selangor Red Giants and Team Vamos will carry Malaysia’s hopes as they compete against some of the strongest teams from around the world.

Across Southeast Asia and other international regions, teams such as Pro Esports from Cambodia, Yangon Galacticos from Myanmar, Ignite Gaming from Singapore, Team Spirit from Eastern Europe, and Aurora Gaming from Türkiye have also secured qualification after impressive championship runs.

As competition intensifies on the global stage, Malaysian fans will be hoping that SRG can translate their domestic dominance into international success.

With a record-breaking five-peat, growing institutional support, and a thriving fan community behind them, Selangor Red Giants head into MSC 2026 carrying not only championship momentum but also the expectations of an entire nation.
