Sid Meier’s Civilization VII is set to receive one of its biggest updates yet as 2K Games and Firaxis Games officially announced the upcoming “Test of Time” Update, launching free for all players on May 19.
The update introduces major gameplay improvements and system overhauls designed to give players more freedom, flexibility, and long-term strategic depth throughout their campaigns.
Continue One Civilization Across Every Age
One of the most requested features finally arrives with the introduction of “Time-Tested Civs.” Players can now begin the game with any civilization from any Age and choose to continue using the same civilization across future Ages instead of switching during transitions.
AI opponents will also follow the player’s approach, either remaining loyal to a single civilization or evolving into different ones as the game progresses. This new mechanic gives players a more consistent empire-building experience while maintaining strategic variety.
Victories System Gets a Complete Rework
The update also introduces a fully redesigned Victories system. Instead of waiting until late-game stages, players can now actively pursue victory conditions from the Antiquity Age onward.
There are four main paths to dominance:
- Military
- Economy
- Culture
- Science
Players who establish overwhelming superiority in one of these categories may even secure victory as early as the Exploration Age, creating faster-paced and more focused gameplay experiences.
Legacy Paths Replaced with Triumphs
Another major change is the removal of Legacy Paths. In its place comes a brand-new system called Triumphs, featuring optional challenges and objectives that help make every playthrough feel unique.
Triumphs are connected to six Attributes:
- Militaristic
- Cultural
- Scientific
- Economic
- Diplomatic
- Expansionist
This new system encourages experimentation and rewards different playstyles, giving players more ways to shape their civilization’s journey.
With these major improvements, the Test of Time Update promises to deliver a fresh and exciting era for Civilization VII fans worldwide.
