Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre has reached a major milestone after becoming the first purpose-built venue in Malaysia to achieve the ISO 20121 Event Sustainability Management certification.
The internationally recognised ISO 20121 standard, developed specifically for the global events industry, provides a comprehensive framework for planning and delivering events with measurable sustainability outcomes. The certification covers key areas such as resource efficiency, waste management, responsible sourcing, and overall operational governance.
The certification was formally presented by BSI Malaysia to the Centre’s leadership team, marking a significant achievement not only for the venue but also for Malaysia’s broader business events industry.
According to John Burke, General Manager of the Centre, the recognition represents a defining moment for the organisation and reinforces its commitment to responsible event management.
“Achieving ISO 20121 certification reflects our dedication to delivering world-class events that are not only memorable but also sustainable and aligned with global best practices,” he said.
The milestone further strengthens Kuala Lumpur’s position as a leading destination for sustainable business events in the region. It also highlights the growing importance of environmental and social responsibility within the meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) sector.
This latest achievement complements the Centre’s previous recognition through the PM Hibiscus Award for Sustainable Convention and Exhibition Centres, underscoring its continued leadership in green operations.
For event organisers, the ISO 20121 certification offers greater assurance that events hosted at the venue will meet internationally recognised sustainability standards. From reduced environmental impact to responsible resource management, organisers can expect structured systems that deliver measurable results.
Delegates attending events at the Centre can also benefit from a more responsible event experience, knowing that sustainability practices are embedded into every aspect of the event lifecycle.
As sustainability continues to shape the future of global events, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre’s achievement sets a new benchmark for the industry in Malaysia. It also signals a broader shift towards integrating environmental responsibility with high-quality event delivery.
With this certification, the Centre not only reinforces its status as a world-class venue but also positions itself at the forefront of sustainable event management in the region — paving the way for a future where excellence and responsibility go hand in hand.
